All the recent proposals bring to mind Joni Mitchell's song from the 70's, "Big Yellow Taxi":

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

WE know what we've got.....and it's not gone.....yet.

We must have "like" minds.  I was thinking about that song a few days ago.  No, it isn't  over yet.

Another song comes to mind by Jimmy Buffett, about the development of an island which is actually on the same general part of the coast.  With him being the environmental, anti-development type and with his popularity, wouldn't it be great if we could get him somehow involved in stopping this? Sounds silly I know, but he's  done it before. Here is a portion of a song, and it sounds eerily similar to what Jekyll is facing.
African drums are silent and the wingos are poets at last
Out on Dafuskie Island, the bulldozers bury the past
And the low country sinks, she can not swim
The dogwood feels the hurt
While the foursome plays on borrowed days in their alligator shirts

Now I realize who killed the prince of tides
How can you tell how it used to be
When there’s nothin’ left to see?

One night they put a price on the sunset
And that got the whole world shaking
They rose from the grave both the weak and the brave
’cause history was there for the makin’
And the winos surrounded the condos
forming a frail human fence
And they shouted out loud to the roar of the crowd
"same old story, more dollars than sense"

Amazing...
I have been a Buffett fan since '77, and the obvious relevance of Prince of Tides "plum evaded me".  For what it's worth, I am writing to Mr. Buffett and pleading our cause.

Phinz up!

I've also been a fan many years.  You know, he does do benefit concerts.  This is a very, very long shot, but if you are writing him, you might also mention that there is a wide open area directly on the beach  where a stage could be erected. You know how large a crowd he can draw, and can you imagine if he were to do a benefit concert in support of Jekyll?  Give everyone a flyer about how the beautiful, unspoiled outdoor setting you are standing in is scheduled to be swallowed up with condos, etc.  I'm just thinking out loud....but you never can tell.
It also just occurred to me that he has a message board on his website.  I may check into starting a thread on there explaining what's going on and including a link back to this site if that's allowed.  Hey - never hurts to ask.

By the way, if you were to happen to get any type of response when you write, email me or post it here.

I wrote him this morning!  The best e-mail address I could find was:

info@margaritaville.com

I know it's a one-in-a-million shot, but maybe word will get to him. I've listened to so much of Jimmy's music that I feel I know him.  He's always been environmentally-conscious; I particularly remember him working to save manatees.  I didn't propose a benefit concert, but really like your idea.  If you find a Buffett message board, please post the link here.

There is a web board at the margaritaville website, but you can't start new topics, and the ones on there are not moderated, thus most everything is off topic. Probably not worth looking into. It would be good to get a high profile person(s) who is not a politician helping in some manner, although the politicians that are on our side are very important! I may send an email to the address you did for whatever it's worth.

This is a long shot too.. however, try contacting the offices of Joan Baez, they might can put you in touch with Buffet folks and Joan might be interested in this also since it does seem to be an International interest in Jekyll Island and its Natural Resources... Big Environmental issues here...

Someone within the Rockefeller Family may also be interested in this. I know that the Jekyll Island Authority, a few years ago, Invited them to Jekyll and tried to get them Interested in their Historical Roots on Jekyll but Once they came and saw what was going on here they declined to get involved with the Jekyll Island Authority. However, if they know now the full story, they may be interested in helping to stop this scam and destruction occurring on the Island.

Well.....someone's been thinking!  Joan Baez, Jimmy Buffet, The Rockefellers---all great suggestions, and why not Joni Mitchell herself?? She is just out with a new CD---anyone who knows how to contact any of the above???

Isn't GoGo Ferguson of Go Go's in Shops of Sea Island on St. Simons a Carnegie, as in the Cumberland Island Carnegies?  That's closer to Jekyll, if you are looking for support close to home.  I would also suggest contacting Bill Shipp, the columnist---a column by Bill would get widespread readership and would be reprinted eternally on http://www.monticellonews.com

But a concert on Jekyll Beach is a GREAT IDEA - with or without nationally known talent.  Surely there are some local or regional musicians ---think jazz, bluegrass, shag--- bands who have made some money on Jekyll --- who don't want to be priced out of their market by Linger Longer's waaaaaay upscale hotel, condominium clientele.
all for now,
keep it going,
