I'm one of those northerners who travels annually from Indiana to experience the peace and tranquility of Jekyll. I've been coming for years, despite the deteriorating condition of the motels, etc. So as a "thank you" for my support all these years I'm going to get booted off the beach and sent packing to "average folks" lodging located on the interior of the island? Oh goodie. The view of the ocean should be great from there. I'll bring my binoculars. Or maybe I'll just buy a postcard of the beach and put it on my motel window. Thanks Mr. Porter. I'll think of you and your cronies whenever I pay my Park entrance fee, and drive away from the ocean on my way to "Have Nots" Haven. Will I have access to the restaurants, or will those be for "members only?"

Statistics from the IPJI's surveys suggest that about 40% of the park's visitors are from out-of-state. Our survey has participants from every stsate in the country except North Dakota.

As a vacationer from the north, we are thrilled with the progress the "Save Jekyll Island" group is making.  We never thought of ourselves as beach people.  We tried many times: Cape May, NJ, Boston, Daytona Beach, and all along the Great Lakes.  We found what we love on Jekyll. We have been back three times and have already planned for this summer too.  Let's hope the developers don't take away what we love!  Open beaches, open spaces, and a place we can still afford to go as a family.

I would bet that of the 40% or so visitors from out of state, about 95% of them don't know what's going on.  I wonder if there would be a way to get the hotels and campground to mail flyers to their out-of-state guests from, say, the past couple of years, especially repeat guests.. I know the Holiday Inn and Buccaneer are gone, but  the records should  still be around somewhere.  This might be a  way to get the word spread to a wider audience, and thus create a louder voice for the IPJI and those in power that are supporting them.

Good idea, but the problem is that the hotels, campground, golf course, etc. don't want to sahre their mail lists wwith others. To rech out-os-state visitors, we've been plaaciong the IPJI's surveys in public places around the island, but I'm sure we miss many vissitors. Word of olmouth has helped spread the word, but still we're still quite limited in our ability to rach non-Georgians on the jekylld evelopment issue.

We are also visitors from up north, Pgh, PA. We enjoy coming to JI for the peace and quiet, and most of all the uncrowded beaches. If we wanted the hustle and bustle of an expensive more commercial beach we would go back to Hilton Head, Clearwater, Daytona and such but we chose this island for the sense of security and again the uncrowded, unpopulated island scene.  We have planned our trip back to the island this summer and are praying that it will not be our last. If all goes as the "others" plan, this island will turn into another Hilton Head where you will be lucky if you can find a spot on the beach to sit and have a relaxing, fun, and peaceful vacation with your family.

The main focus of ours was that our children have a nice place to enjoy the beach and water w/o worrying about crowds of people obstructing our view of our children playing. Now don't get me wrong, we are parents who keep our kids at arms-length, but on other islands, that is even impossible with the crowds.  We travel the 12-14 hours to JI just for that reason. We definitely have beaches closer that we can go to but it is the "unpopulated, uncrowded and not over commercialized" beach that we enjoy.

We understand that everything has to "change" in one way or another, but we are praying that they keep the most "important" things the same. The stuff that brought all of us from other states, and those from the state of GA, to the island in the first place.

Our thoughts on the "upper-class, upper-scale", or whatever they want to call it, hotels, resorts or whatever else is in their planning could really end up hurting their overall outcome instead of helping as they will end up losing a lot of visitors who do not visit other places just for that reason. I again reiterate the fact that those places already exist. What state can honestly boast the fact that they have the most peaceful, tranquil, uncrowded, unpopulated and beautiful ocean views of the east coast? No other place than JI, that's who.

Thanks for listening. Just a family who enjoys the island "as is".

I have been going to Jeykll Island since I was about 3 months old I have lots of memories of that Island. I have seen that Island change little by little the 26 years I have been visiting. I wanna be able to afford to bring my children one day and let them experience everything the Island has to offer just as I have done the past years that I have been visiting. I still visit Jeykll Island to this very day I actually have reservations to stay their next week. Jeykll Island still shows me things that I would not see else where. Like the Sunrise on the beach side of the Island or the Sunset on the back side of the Island both are very breath taking. Only God could create something amazing!!
IF YOU WANT A GREAT SUNSET OR SUNRISE GO TO JEYKLL IT OFFERS BOTH!!!

We again spent our summer vacation on the island and enjoyed every last minute of this place as usual. Maybe if these people who plan to "improve" the island actually spent a week or so on this wonderful island they would come to understand why those of us who actually bring our families there for an actual "vacation" would like to see things remain the same and leave well enough alone.  We spent almost two weeks there this August and even rode out the affects from Fay. We have three boys who every year when we ask what they want to do, their reply is "go back to Jekyll". They just love this place and want to continue coming there for as long as they can. This is a great place to start family traditions and that is what I am hoping will happen with our boys. That they in turn will bring their families to the island when they travel. The major issue in all of this "revitalization" is the fact that "someone" feels the need to bring all these high priced hotels, condos, etc onto this island. For what? Does the middle class families money spend differently? Taking away views of the ocean and moderately priced hotel rooms are going to make the middle class families look for other reasonably priced vacation spots instead of returning to Jekyll island. If they feel that these higher priced areas are going to bring in more "upper-class" families, they might want to think again. If they were so interested in coming to the island, would they not have come already? I think if they did, they would not care about how much money they spent to pretty much "sleep" as much as they would just have enjoyed the island's amenities that already exist.

I may be just going on to some of you, but this is the one place that my husband and I have found that we truly enjoy and feel safe bringing our sons to for vacation where your dollar still gets you a nice, safe, and fun family vacation! With today's economy the way it is, do they really think families are going to want to spend "more" on their summer vacations and get "less"? I think not. Maybe their focus should be on keeping the vacationers that they already have each and every summer instead of trying to dislodge us somewhere else and bring in more of the "money folk".

This past August we spent almost two weeks on the island and it was truly a relaxing time. Considering we drive over 12 hours to get to the island from the Pittsburgh, PA area, it is well-worth the drive, even with three kids, 14, 9, and 3!! We have been on the island four times now and will continue to return as long as it stays affordable for a family without breaking the bank.

I just wish those who have never spent time on the island would just go. Even for a weekend. Just visit and see what we are all trying to save!! Those who want the change, never truly experienced the "island time experience" on Jekyll. It is like being in a totally different time.

Jekyll Island is the true meaning of "vacation". No rushing, hustle, or bustle. Just relaxation and time. What else do you really need in life?
